Netflix Outer Banks Season 5: A Bittersweet Farewell to the Pogues (Is It Worth Watching?)
Introduction
The cast and fans of Season 5 of Outer Banks bid farewell to the Pogues and the tight-knit crew we’ve all grown to love.
It was an emotional send-off for the OBX family, coming on the heels of last season’s heartbreaking loss of JJ.
It’s been six years since we first met John B (Chase Stokes), JJ (Rudy Pankow), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), Kiara (Madison Bailey), and Sarah (Madelyn Cline).
Across that stretch we’ve followed this band of friends through wild treasure hunts, life on the run from law enforcement and brushes with death that kept us all on edge.
With Season 5 being the show’s finale, we’d expect it to raise the stakes with more action, more romance, and more adventures.
Now this season had its standout moments — solid story development and plot rich with substance — but it also had stretches where the writing felt lazy, as if it were cheating its way out of writer’s block.
Sure, we get that the show leans adventurous and fantasy, even melodramatic. It pulls the audience in through visuals, the Pogues’ underdog narrative and their loyalty to each other rather than through deep dialogue and a complex story line.
But the broader story and plot mechanics remain thin. We can overlook the sketchy planning or head-scratching choices made by John B and the gang, though, because there’s more here to hook you than the surface-level narrative suggests.
Forget prestige storytelling — much like Stranger Things or Cobra Kai. This is a show built for a younger audience.
It’s less about airtight plotting and more about watching this crew push through adversity. And that’s a valuable lesson here: “ you can get through anything with the right friends at your side”.
But at this point, we all know roughly how it’s going to end; there’s no real risk of major fallout or fatalities looming.
That said, this season leaned into deeper emotional stakes compared to the previous seasons, and every character got room to explore this.
Rafe (Drew Starkey) in particular had more emotional baggage this season. Going from pogues enemies to forming alliances and running from his past all weighed in on his character.
And the actor showed his talent in delivering those moments. Rafe is one character that developed the most throughout the series.
His scenes were engaging and he really gave you a more personal connection with his character such as in his last scene with Madelyn cline, the emotions felt real and raw.
Cinematograpy
The cinematography stands out as one of the season’s strongest elements — there’s a particular episode where the director pulled off some rare, technically demanding shots that genuinely deserve recognition.
The action sequences showed where the series stands out, the choreography paired with the cinematography produced some exciting and visually appealing scenes.
That’s clearly where much of the season’s budget went, and it paid off beautifully. Bringing the series full circle back to where it all began added a genuinely nice touch.
It brought us back to season one vibe and energy, playing on the audience’s emotions in a pleasing way. The cozy carefree seaside life and the adventure of hunting down long lost treasures.
Is Outer Banks Season 5 Worth Watching?
Absolutely. It’s a guilty pleasure, and one you’ll find yourself binging for a while. When TV shows are given the time to grow and let audiences bond with their characters, they have the chance to become something truly special.
This crew had that potential all along, and I’m glad OBX finally got the chance to prove it. It’s an escape from the boredom of everyday life — easy to follow, fun, and warm in all the right ways. And it sticks the landing too. This one will surely be missed.
