Emmys 2026 Winners: Historic Night of Shocks
The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards brought a night full of historic wins and unprecedented TV moments.
The ceremony took place on Monday, September 14 at the Peacock Theatre, Los Angeles. Mariska Hargitay presented the ceremony after herself becoming a huge Emmy winner.
The night was one of celebration for TV’s finest performances, shows, writers, directors and crews. However, some winners stole the spotlight long after their acceptance speeches were finished.
Widow’s Bay turned out to be the night’s biggest winner by taking home an unprecedented 14 Emmys.
The Pitt maintained its title of the best TV drama by winning Outstanding Drama Series once more. Jean Smart made some more Emmy history by getting her second win for Hacks.
Matthew Rhys made history himself with his two big acting wins. The ceremony thus became a night full of records, goodbyes, surprises and emotional speeches.
Widow’s Bay Dominates The Emmys
The story of the night was undeniably that of Widow’s Bay. The Apple TV+ horror-comedy entered the season as one of the biggest breakout hits of the year.
It would use this momentum to deliver an exceptional performance at the Emmys. The series secured 14 wins throughout the 2026 Emmy season.
This was a record number for any comedy series in a single season. The series took home Outstanding Comedy Series at Monday’s televised award show.
It won big in the acting, writing and directing categories. Matthew Rhys won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.
Stephen Root won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Kate O’Flynn won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
Katie Dippold won Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. Hiro Murai won Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series.
This was nearly a sweep of the main comedy categories. It has cemented Widow’s Bay as one of television’s biggest new comedy forces.
Winning in such a fashion was all the more notable considering the strong competition for Emmy wins.
The win is the latest in a string of successes for Apple TV+ during an increasingly competitive television awards season.

Matthew Rhys makes Emmy history
Matthew Rhys produced one of the night’s most remarkable individual achievements. The Welsh actor won two lead acting awards during the same ceremony.
He first won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow’s Bay. He later won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for The Beast in Me.
Rhys therefore became the first actor to win two lead acting awards during one Emmy ceremony. His achievement became even more significant because of his previous Emmy victory.
Rhys won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for The Americans in 2018. He has now won lead acting awards across comedy, drama and limited series categories.
That makes him the first male performer to achieve the complete lead acting sweep. The achievement placed Rhys among the most successful performers in Emmy history.
His reaction also became one of the night’s memorable television moments. Rhys appeared genuinely stunned when his second victory was announced.
His speeches also included an emotional tribute to his Welsh heritage. The achievement gave the ceremony one of its clearest historical talking points.
Jean Smart completes a remarkable Emmy run
Emmy history was made by Jean Smart at the show too. The actress managed to win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks.
This was her fifth consecutive win in the category. It means that Smart won the award for each season of Hacks.
In other words, Smart became the first woman to win in the category each season of one show. It was especially important since this year Hacks completed its fifth season.
Thus, Smart’s journey with Emmy through the series ended with another win. The actress’ latest Emmy win made the total number of her acting Emmy wins equal to eight.
In turn, this total makes Smart on par with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cloris Leachman. Both actresses managed to win eight acting Emmys in their lifetime.
This win was extremely important for the emotional end of Hacks at television’s biggest awards show.
The Pitt Wins The Drama Crown Again
The Pitt came into the awards ceremony with the largest number of nominations in the year. The medical drama was nominated 25 times before the awards ceremony started.
The Pitt went on to win Outstanding Drama Series for the second year running. Noah Wyle too won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series award for the second time running.
The two were the most crucial wins that the Pitt had gotten during the night.
The win by Wyle was also a very important one considering the fact that it was a consecutive win.
Wyle became the first drama lead actor in recent memory to win a consecutive award since Bryan Cranston.
Bryan Cranston achieved the same for his performance in the TV series Breaking Bad. The Pitt, therefore, managed to confirm its status as one of the best dramas currently airing on TV.
This shows that the success of the Pitt last year was not just a one season deal.
Rhea Seehorn Finally Gets Her Emmy
Rhea Seehorn provided yet another emotionally charged moment at the ceremony. She was awarded Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role in Pluribus.
The achievement marked yet another important accomplishment in Seehorn’s distinguished career on TV. The win was also welcomed by her dedicated fans who had been following her work for many years.
The win for Pluribus also further boosted the reputation of the show during the successful night for Apple TV.
The win made Seehorn’s win one of the most satisfying individual achievements at the event.

Stephen Colbert Receives A Significant Farewell
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert took home the award for Outstanding Variety Series. The win was significant because the show had just concluded.
Colbert took his winning speech to thank the production crew of the show. He urged other employers to consider hiring the individuals who worked behind the show.
This particular win took on even greater significance because the show was coming to an end. For Colbert, it was also an important recognition of his many years of work in television.
The win was one of the biggest talking points of the entire ceremony.
The Traitors Continues Its Einning Streak
The Traitors kept their winning streak going even at the Emmy Awards. The reality TV competition received the award for Outstanding Reality Competition Program.
