BFI London Film Festival Experience

My First Visit to the BFI London Film Festival: Cinema, Culture and an Unexpected Red Carpet Encounter
Attending the BFI London Film Festival for the first time was not only about the pleasure of viewing a movie in an esteemed setting, but also about the unforeseen excitement of seeing a film premier on the red carpet.
From the architecture of the Royal Festival Hall to the anticipation of Hollywood celebrities’ appearance, my visit provided me with an insight into why the festival is considered to be a remarkable event for cinephiles.
My chosen screening was Paper Tiger, which was being shown at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, one of the flagship venues of the 70th BFI London Film Festival.
I’ll be reviewing the film separately, but the venue and the overall experience deserve a feature of their own.
An Impressive Venue, but Finding Your Seat Is Another Story

Impressions about the Royal Festival Hall are immediately formed upon entry. It has a magnificent structure inside, which makes it seem like you are attending some very important occasion, something that is miles apart from the usual environment of a normal movie hall.
It can become somewhat difficult to find your place especially if it is your first time at the venue. This place has several levels and various ways in which one can enter the place. It takes some skillful navigation, which I myself could not accomplish without getting lost.

Fortunately, there were plenty of staff members on hand to offer directions and help visitors find their seats.
Their presence made the experience much less stressful, especially for a first-time visitor trying to work out the layout.
Once inside the auditorium, though, it was easy to appreciate the scale of the building. The Royal Festival Hall is an impressive atrium, with its grand balconies, royal boxes and expansive seating creating a distinctive atmosphere.
There is a real sense of history and grandeur about the space, making it an exciting setting for a major film festival screening.
My seat was in the front stalls, where I found the seating comfortable enough, with just about the right amount of legroom. It was a perfectly reasonable spot from which to settle in and enjoy the screening.
A Concert Hall Transformed Into a Cinema

The main point which makes viewing films at the Royal Festival Hall so exciting is the fact that this place is not an ordinary movie theater.
Known mainly as a concert venue, this Grade I listed building serves as a concert hall and holds many events of national importance.
However, during the BFI London Film Festival, it is turned into a huge movie venue temporarily.
It is not only a screen set up in the hall; the organizers of the film festival prepare a proper movie venue for such events.
The temporary installation consists of a massive screen placed at the main stage of the festival hall, laser projection and surround sound system. All these elements are used in order to provide a cinematic experience which will fill such a big space and at the same time will be visually spectacular.
Watching movies in a concert hall brings some special feeling to the screening process. One does not find oneself in an enclosed building which is specifically built for showing movies, but in an open space of an auditorium surrounded by beautiful architectural elements.
With its capacity of about 2,000 people, Royal Festival Hall also provides the viewer with the unique atmosphere of screening.
Being among so many other fans of movies makes one feel like participating in a special event.
Since the movie installation will only exist temporarily, the experience takes on an added quality of uniqueness.
The entire time of the festival, a world-famous concert hall becomes a center for the movies, merging the worlds of cinema, music and theater in one place.
An Unexpected Red-Carpet Moment

One of the biggest surprises of my visit came after the screening.
As I was making my way out of the venue, I happened to encounter the preparations and arrivals for the red-carpet premiere of the movie Wildwood.

It was entirely unplanned, but suddenly I found myself in the middle of another exciting part of the festival experience.
In fact, I was able to snap some pictures of some of the the event. The movie stars Peyton Elizabeth Lee and Jacob Tremblay. Who both attended

For a first-timer like me to be able to attend the festival, that was an unexpected perk and made the trip all the more enjoyable.
The festival seemed to be very organized, with security personnel ensuring that order is kept in the premises as stars and film crews came into view.
Indeed, there was a certain excitement among those attending as the red carpet brought a little glamour to the laid-back ambience of Southbank.
It is true that my intention in going to the festival was to see Paper Tiger, but stumbling into the Wildwood premiere allowed me to experience something new in the festival.
Also, it was my first time to be able to witness a red-carpet premiere. Sometimes, the most exciting things happen when you least expect it.
A Festival for Film Lovers — Without the Pressure

One thing I particularly appreciated about my first BFI London Film Festival experience was how accessible and relaxed it felt.
Despite the prestige associated with the event, there was no pressure to dress up or look particularly glamorous.
The atmosphere was casual, and people could simply turn up, enjoy their chosen screening and soak up the surroundings.
This is one reason why the event is so exciting. Although the festival features big names in the industry, it is also a chance for the common moviegoer to view movies in special venues and join in the celebrations of film.
Be it an avid fan of the movie industry, keeping track of festivals through their announcements or just a person who enjoys discovering new movies, there is always a sense of excitement in being part of the event itself.
It does not require any knowledge of the industry to enjoy the movie screening, the venue and the whole spirit of the premiere.
Although the Royal Festival Hall may not seem like the easiest place to navigate on first visit, the friendly staff, impressive surroundings and atmosphere make this an exciting place to enjoy the festival experience.
Would I Go Again?
Absolutely.
My first attendance at the BFI London Film Festival was certainly a pleasant experience and I got far more out of it than I expected to.
The experience was not only fun but also made me understand what made this film festival so important an event in London’s culture.
The experience would be recommended by me to all film lovers as well as people interested in visiting their first film festival in their lives.
The experience will allow you to soak in the atmosphere without having to put on anything fancy or be familiar with the film industry. Just show up, watch the film and let the experience take you where it wants.
For my part, I took away a lot of good memories, a lot of photos and a renewed appreciation of film festivals.
I will definitely be coming back next year.
