First Impressions and Expectations

I decided to watch Reminders of Him mainly because I am a fan of Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers. Normally, I do not seek out romantic dramas. However, I enjoy both actors and wanted to see how they worked together in this film. Because of that, my interest in the movie started with the cast rather than the story.

At first, I expected a fairly typical emotional drama. In other words, I assumed the movie would follow familiar storytelling patterns often found in this genre. I expected a heavy focus on romance and emotional conflict. However, the film surprised me more than I expected. As the story developed, I became more invested in the characters and their struggles.

The movie follows Kenna Rowan, a young woman who returns to her hometown after serving time in prison. She hopes to rebuild her life and reconnect with her daughter. Unfortunately, the town still remembers the tragedy connected to her past. Because of this situation, many people refuse to give her a second chance.

As a result, the story focuses heavily on guilt, forgiveness, and redemption. These themes shape nearly every major moment in the film. In addition, the emotional tension comes from Kenna trying to prove that she deserves another chance at life.

The story slowly reveals the emotional consequences of her past actions. As the narrative progresses, the audience learns more about the relationships affected by the tragedy. Because of this approach, the film builds emotional weight over time rather than revealing everything immediately.

The Performances

In my opinion, Maika Monroe delivers a very strong performance in this film. She brings vulnerability and emotional depth to the role of Kenna Rowan. More importantly, she makes the character feel realistic rather than overly dramatic.

I have been a fan of Monroe for some time, so I already expected a solid performance. However, this role allows her to show a quieter and more emotionally grounded side of her acting. Therefore, her work in this movie easily became one of my favorite aspects of the film.

Director Vanessa Caswill approaches the film with a strong focus on character driven storytelling. As a result, the movie emphasizes emotional moments rather than large dramatic events.

The camera frequently stays close to the actors during important scenes. Because of this choice, the audience experiences the characters’ emotions in a more personal way. Close shots highlight small expressions and reactions that reveal the characters’ inner struggles.

The film also uses natural lighting and muted colors throughout many scenes. These visual choices create a reflective and serious atmosphere. In addition, the quieter tone matches the emotional themes of guilt and redemption.

Caswill also allows certain scenes to unfold slowly. Instead of rushing through emotional moments, the film pauses and lets the characters process what they are feeling. Sometimes this approach works very well and deepens the emotional experience.

The director also focuses heavily on intimate settings. Many scenes take place in small rooms, quiet streets, or personal spaces. Because of that setting, the story feels contained and emotionally focused.

However, these stylistic choices also influence the pacing of the movie.

Pacing and Story Structure

One aspect that did not always work perfectly for me was the pacing. In some parts of the film, the story moves at a steady and engaging rhythm. However, other sections feel slower than necessary.

The middle portion of the movie especially feels uneven at times. Several scenes extend longer than they need to in order to communicate their message. As a result, the narrative momentum slows down.

While those scenes still contain strong acting, they sometimes repeat emotional beats that the audience already understands. Because of that repetition, the story briefly loses some of its energy

However, the slower pacing also allows certain emotional moments to resonate. When the movie focuses on Kenna’s struggle to reconnect with her daughter, the slower rhythm actually strengthens the impact.

Therefore, the pacing feels inconsistent rather than entirely problematic. Some scenes benefit from the extra breathing room, while others might have worked better with tighter editing.

Themes and Emotional Impact

Their chemistry creates believable tension and connection that keeps the story compelling. Even during slower sections, their performances maintain the emotional focus of the film.

Although the pacing feels uneven in certain parts, the emotional payoff remains satisfying. Because of that balance, the movie succeeds as a character driven drama.

In my opinion, Reminders of Him works best when it focuses on the emotional journeys of its characters. Even viewers who normally avoid this genre may still appreciate the strong performances and thoughtful storytelling.

The movie may not appeal to everyone who prefers faster paced storytelling. However, viewers who enjoy character focused dramas will likely find the emotional journey worthwhile. For me, the combination of strong performances and sincere storytelling made the experience surprisingly engaging.
