Piece by Piece tracks Pharrell’s childhood growing up in Virginia Beach, where he felt out of place but discovered he had synesthesia—seeing colors when hearing music.
It shows how he teamed up with his childhood friend Chad Hugo to form the legendary music production duo The Neptunes.
It then follows his path to creating massive hits for global superstars like Jay-Z, Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dogg, and Britney Spears, before launching his own solo megahit, “Happy.”
The film functions like a traditional documentary, featuring real audio interviews from Pharrell and his famous collaborators, but their real-life forms are replaced entirely by colorful LEGO animations.
