First Impressions and Expectations
I decided to watch Reminders of Him mainly because I am a fan of Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers. Normally, I do not seek out romantic dramas. However, I enjoy both actors and wanted to see how they worked together in this film. Because of that, my interest in the movie started with the cast rather than the story.
At first, I expected a fairly typical emotional drama. In other words, I assumed the movie would follow familiar storytelling patterns often found in this genre. I expected a heavy focus on romance and emotional conflict. However, the film surprised me more than I expected. As the story developed, I became more invested in the characters and their struggles.
The movie follows Kenna Rowan, a young woman who returns to her hometown after serving time in prison. She hopes to rebuild her life and reconnect with her daughter. Unfortunately, the town still remembers the tragedy connected to her past. Because of this situation, many people refuse to give her a second chance.
Therefore, there is an immense emphasis on the themes of guilt, forgiveness, and redemption. All the significant events in the movie revolve around these themes. Moreover, the dramatic element lies in the efforts of Kenna to demonstrate her worthiness of another chance at life.
The emotional impact of what she has done begins to unfold gradually. The more the story moves ahead, the more we begin to learn about the people whose lives were touched by the tragedy. This is why the movie gains its emotional strength through a gradual build-up.
The Performances

In my opinion, Maika Monroe delivers a very strong performance in this film. She brings vulnerability and emotional depth to the role of Kenna Rowan. More importantly, she makes the character feel realistic rather than overly dramatic.
Many scenes depend on quiet reactions rather than dramatic speeches. Because of that, Monroe carries the emotional weight through subtle expressions and body language. For example, her facial expressions often communicate more than the dialogue itself.
As a result, the audience can clearly see the guilt and pain Kenna carries throughout the story. Monroe also shows determination and hope as the character slowly tries to rebuild her life. Because of that balance, the performance feels layered and believable.
I have been a fan of Monroe for some time, so I already expected a solid performance. However, this role allows her to show a quieter and more emotionally grounded side of her acting. Therefore, her work in this movie easily became one of my favorite aspects of the film.
Several scenes rely almost entirely on Monroe’s reactions rather than dialogue. During those moments, she communicates frustration, regret, and hope through small changes in expression. Because of that subtlety, the character feels authentic and emotionally complex.
Tyriq Withers also impressed me throughout the movie. I have seen him in two previous films before this one. Those films include I Know What You Did Last Summer 2025 and Him. In both movies, he showed strong screen presence and confidence.

However, in Reminders of Him, he gets a chance to portray himself emotionally. This is because in this particular story, he acts the part of a man torn between loyalty, empathy, and ambiguity.
There is nothing exaggerated in his gestures or emotional reactions. On the contrary, his actions are always understated. This allows him to create a real person.
It is noteworthy that Withers managed to keep control over himself all the time. No matter what happened in a particular scene, he did not allow himself to get too excited.
The Chemistry Between Monroe and Withers

The chemistry between Monroe and Withers can definitely be considered one of the main strengths of the movie. Right from the start of their appearance on screen, the interaction of the two actors seems realistic. And easy to believe
When we first meet them, their relationship is characterized by doubt and suspicion. Ledger finds it difficult to trust Kenna based on her previous experiences. On the other hand, Kenna yearns for somebody to give her an opportunity.
Due to this, the conflict between them becomes particularly engaging. They tend to be cautious in their interactions with one another. Moreover, their body language and gaze convey a sense of doubt.
As the story progresses, their relationship gradually starts to transform. Moments of warmth and understanding begin to replace the former tension. Since the movie allows time for the development of these moments, the transformation feels real.
To me, this slow building process enhances the emotional aspect of the story. The chemistry is never hurried. On the contrary, the bond develops organically between two people who have to deal with their past.
There are several instances showing how important non-verbal communication is for both actors. Sometimes, all it takes is a whisper or an exchange of glances to reveal more than a monologue.
Direction and Visual Style
Director Vanessa Caswill approaches the film with a strong focus on character driven storytelling. As a result, the movie emphasizes emotional moments rather than large dramatic events.
The filming remains at a close-up distance when depicting essential parts of the movie. Thanks to such approach, the viewer gets more engaged in the characters’ feelings. Close-ups emphasize all details that demonstrate the conflicts inside the characters.
Natural lighting and muted tones dominate most of the scenes in the film. Such choice adds a certain contemplative and serious mood. Moreover, a quiet mood of the film is also associated with its theme of guilt and redemption.
Caswell also takes his time to portray some of the sequences in the movie. Unlike movies where the emotions come in quickly, this particular movie takes time for the actors to understand their feelings. This style has been executed quite effectively in some places in the movie.
In addition to all that, the director has focused largely on small places within the movie. It is evident that most of the scenes take place in closed environments.
However, these stylistic choices also influence the pacing of the movie.
Pacing and Story Structure
One element that does not necessarily come out too effectively all the time is the pace. While the plot takes on an interesting pace at certain points of the film, there are moments where the pace becomes somewhat slow.
This problem comes out most noticeably in the middle portion of the film where there are some scenes that tend to go beyond what is necessary in conveying the message.
Even though there is good acting in these scenes, at times they may be too predictable and include emotions that people watching have already figured out. This makes the story lose some of its pace temporarily.
Nonetheless, some emotional aspects may gain weight due to the slower pacing. For example, the scenes dealing with Kenna trying to make contact with her daughter can only be made more intense by the pacing.
Thus, the film has pacing problems, but they are not completely undesirable. There are several scenes where the slower pace works perfectly well.
Themes and Emotional Impact

Themes in Reminders of Him. Some of the themes explored in Reminders of Him include redemption. In other words, it is about people getting another chance to do things right because of their past mistakes.
The theme of forgiveness is another significant aspect to be discussed. Forgiveness proves difficult for many characters as they are wondering whether or not Kenna will ever deserve their forgiveness after what happened. This causes a high level of emotional tension within the movie.
Additionally, the theme of building trust plays a huge part in the story. Kenna needs to regain the trust of everyone around her. However, this process seems quite complicated and uncomfortable.
The movie also deals with the issue of loss and people’s ways of coping with it. For example, some people are holding their rage against loss while others are moving towards acceptance. In my opinion, this diversity contributes to making these conflicts credible.
In my opinion, these themes are better represented in the movie if it concentrates on the relationships of the characters. In particular, it is the interaction of Kenna, Ledger, and the child that is the strongest part of the movie.
Overall Thoughts
Overall, Reminders of Him shocked me in various ways. The main reason why I decided to watch the film was due to the fact that I admire the two lead characters of the movie. But it turned out that both the plot and the performances managed to hold my attention for the entire duration of the movie.
In the movie, Maika Monroe gave an authentic and multifaceted performance which adds depth to the film. On the other hand, Tyriq Withers gives a cool and thoughtful performance, which complements the performances of his character’s partner.
While the pace is inconsistent at some points in the film, the overall emotional payoff was satisfying. That being said, the film works well as a character-driven drama due to this balance between plot points.
My verdict is that Reminders of Him is an effective film primarily because of the emotional journey taken by the characters involved. Viewers who typically do not watch such films can still enjoy this movie despite the genre.
This film might not suit the audience that prefers more fast-paced plots. Nevertheless, those who love character-driven dramas would find it interesting since it offers an emotional journey for them.
