Introduction

The genre of martial arts movies has always been built on tales of honor, sacrifice, and survival. The tale told in Blades of the Guardians is steeped in all of these conventions but does so on an epic scale. In a hostile setting of the desert, the story revolves around a perilous journey full of treachery, desire, and brutality. The movie is directed by Yuen Woo-ping, an internationally acclaimed choreographer in martial arts films.

The plot revolves around Dao Ma, an accomplished bounty hunter hired to perform what seemed to be an easy task; protecting a stranger during their trip to Chang’an. Dao Ma soon discovers that the person he’s supposed to escort is Zhi Shi Lang, a wanted fugitive by the entire empire. This makes Dao Ma’s job much riskier and difficult due to the number of powerful people and groups that want to capture Zhi Shi Lang, including government agents, warrior rivals, merchants, and clans.

Blades of the Guardians can be described as a typical wuxia story but in addition, it tries to convey some more profound themes such as loyalty, morality, and misuse of power. Though there are times when the movie suffers from its big ambitions, it nevertheless becomes quite an interesting martial arts show.

The greatest strength of the film comes from the director, Yuen Woo-ping. His contributions permeate each scene with action. Very few directors are as knowledgeable about directing an action sequence as Yuen. His long years of experience enable him to deliver a blend of visual entertainment as well as story.

Unlike contemporary action films which depend heavily on fast-cutting techniques, Blades of the Guardians steers clear of this. It ensures that the camera focuses only on the actors performing. The result is a very clear understanding of the action presented.

Yuen is aware of the fact that martial arts movies need to say something about the characters. The fights of the movie are more than mere physical demonstrations. The style used is determined by personality, motivation, and emotional state. The manner in which the fight is conducted depends on personal experiences, beliefs, and goals of the fighters. It adds purpose to many of the clashes in the movie.

Moreover, the director shows his great mastery of pacing in action scenes. The large scale battles are never chaotic and unclear. The well-paced scenes make it easier for the viewer to stay focused during the most elaborate set pieces of the movie.

Most importantly, Yuen approaches the genre in the respectful way. He does not try to change anything but praises the best qualities of the genre. The final result is both nostalgic and modern at the same time. Fans of the genre will recognize familiar elements. newcomers will have easy introduction into it.

Cinematography and Visual Style

The importance of cinematography in the film cannot be overestimated since Tony Cheung Tung-Leung helps to establish an atmosphere and visual style. His images are not only faithful to the historical setting but also capture its mysticism.

Deserts are the source of many great visual images created for the film. The vast stretches of sands give the sense of isolation and danger. The scale of the journey of characters is captured in wide shots and, thus, the environment looks like one of the greatest dangers for the heroes along with people who want to hunt them.

Moreover, Cheung gives the movie a distinctively Chinese look because of costumes, architecture, weapons, and settings. It is impossible to say that the movie is a typical fantasy action adventure since it is strongly connected with the traditions and aesthetic values which inspire it.

One of the elements which are successfully used in the film is the lighting. The golden sunsets, dark rooms, dusty horizons give an impression of Chinese paintings in motion.

It is also very effective when there are fight sequences in the movie. Movements by the camera remain smooth. Viewers are provided with good visuals not only of the fight but also of the surroundings in which it takes place.

Although there are some visual effects in the film, they never overshadow what is physically present. In fact, the entire movie prefers to have physical places and environments.

Martial Arts and Action Sequences

It comes as no surprise that, like the other productions of Yuen Woo-ping, this one is particularly strong when it comes to the martial arts scenes. The choreography is quite diverse and includes not only sword fighting but also hand-to-hand combat and battles.

What makes this action stand out is the fact that it does not try to confuse the audience – on the contrary, the movement and strategies are clearly visible. This simplicity is not always easy to achieve nowadays. It is evident that the filmmakers believe in their actors and give them the chance to perform.

The skills of the actors play a great role in the success of this production, since many of the performers have spent years perfecting their acting and martial arts skills.

The desert setting creates conditions for creating an interesting choreography and allows the filmmakers to create horseback chases, duels in the open environment and clashes that effectively use the landscape.

Moreover, several fights help to illustrate characters’ traits and conflicts. They are the true dialogue between two people that happens with the help of physical contact.

Still, there are elements of this movie which could be improved upon. There are scenes where the action itself comes before developing the emotional connection with the character. Sometimes the film concentrates so much on the choreography that it overlooks the development of the characters.

Also, sometimes it is hard to deal with such a great amount of combatants. All of them do not get enough screen time in order for them to become interesting.

However, it is still enjoyable action movie. It is obvious that the work put into the choreography of each scene was really hard. Those who love watching the martial arts movies will enjoy it a lot.

Themes and Storytelling

The action is grounded by a plot revolving around themes of honor, loyalty, and personal responsibility. Dao Ma’s quest becomes the main focus of the movie emotionally. The protagonist is faced with a set of ethical issues that have to be solved and give depth to the storyline aside from its physical battles.

The issue of duty versus self-interest becomes one of the most important aspects in the movie. Most of the characters are motivated by money, power, and survival. It is up to Dao Ma to understand whether the idea of honor can exist in a society full of greedy people. These ethical issues generate much of the conflict in the film.

Power and corruption play an essential role in the story as well. Virtually every group aims at acquiring more power for its own selfish interests. The alliances are constantly changing while individuals achieve their goals.

How ordinary people get involved in political games is another theme raised in the movie. At first, Dao Ma’s quest seems simple. Soon enough, however, he gets embroiled into much greater political battles.

Nevertheless, the plot occasionally gets crowded. There are many different groups trying to get their share of attention at various points in the movie. Some of the secondary characters do not get much depth even when it seems like they should.

Sometimes the pacing gets uneven too. It feels like the film is more concerned about getting to the action than about how the events might affect the characters emotionally. A little bit more character development would go far in a lot of relationships.

Nevertheless, the themes keep things interesting and relevant. The movie does a good job building a solid base under all of the action. Even if it is not groundbreaking, it does a good job with its storytelling.

Performances

The film is definitely lucky with its stellar ensemble cast. Different generations of martial artists work together in front of the camera, adding to the festive atmosphere. This collective experience makes things much better.

Jet Li brings much weight with his appearance on screen despite having very few moments to showcase his talents on screen. Jet Li immediately brings prestige with him. Having been on screen for years, he manages to attract people’s attention very well. Many fans would be glad to see him share screen space with other masters of martial arts.

The rest of the cast plays a positive role as well. The actors bring a real world with real characters onto the screen, even though not all of them have much character development.

Many of the scenes benefit from the cast’s chemistry. Their familiarity with the genre of martial arts movies is clearly felt through the whole movie.

What Works and What Does Not

A number of factors come together to create a successful film. Action choreography is undoubtedly one of the top ones on this list. It can be guaranteed thanks to the skill of Yuen Woo-ping. Cinematography deserves credit for its beautiful work as well.

Speaking about the actors, we can definitely say that they form one more strong point of the film. Experienced actors give realism to their characters, which makes the whole experience more engaging for the viewer. The film also manages to convey the atmosphere of the wuxia genre.

The concepts of honor, loyalty, and sacrifice serve as important bases for the drama. They make the story more profound than an ordinary action adventure movie. Visual aspects contribute to the overall uniqueness of the film.

Unfortunately, some shortcomings prevent the film from achieving its maximum. Too many factions and people sometimes interfere with the plot. Some people seem to be underdeveloped in spite of their significance to the story.

The rhythm of the movie can also be uneven. Sometimes the emphasis is made on actions while the interaction between characters is neglected. Thus, some emotional moments become less powerful.

Sometimes the plot is based on stereotypical elements. People who know wuxia movies well can predict some events easily. They do not surprise viewers.

Nevertheless, these shortcomings never completely undermine the experience. The film remains entertaining and engaging throughout its runtime. Its strengths comfortably outweigh its weaknesses.

Final Verdict

The Blades of the Guardians is a good martial arts movie which respects the legacy of the wuxia movies. The direction of Yuen Woo-Ping makes sure that all action scenes have their purpose and are professionally directed. The cinematography by Tony Cheung Tung-Leung makes sure that a beautiful, dangerous, and mythic world is created. Good performances by Wu Jing, Nicholas Tse, Yu Shi, and Jet Li support this.

Nevertheless, at some moments in the film there were too many plot lines intertwined and it was hard to keep track of them all. Some characters could have been given more depth. But these drawbacks do not detract from the numerous accomplishments made by the movie.

Though it does not reach the peaks of perfection of such films as Drunken Master, for instance, Blades of the Guardians manages to be a successful piece of work both as entertainment and as homage to martial arts movies. This movie pays tribute to the genre and tells an exciting story in it.

Thus, this movie knows how to play to its strong suits and to its advantage and makes full use of its opportunities. Spectacle, professionalism, and soul are present here in their proper measure.
