Marvel Studios has now revealed its newest X-Men film in a long-awaited reveal, with fans getting a glimpse of the group that will be taking the mutant saga into a brand new generation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and director Jake Schreier revealed during the D23 event the principal cast for the film and also revealed the theatrical release date for the same.

The X-Men 2028 Movie is slated to premiere on May 5, 2028, while Marvel has confirmed that those cast members revealed so far are just the tip of the iceberg.

Christopher Abbott will play Professor Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving will play Emma Frost. The rest of the mutants include Maya Boyd as Storm, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Adam Driver as Mister Sinister.

That last name may be the biggest surprise of the entire announcement.

Adam Driver’s involvement with Marvel became a topic of speculations for several months. Fans tried to guess what important mutant the actor can play.

It seemed that Marvel decided to tease their audience a bit.

During the D23 presentation, the company released a video where Adam Driver teased about his new character and at first glance seemed to confirm the rumors – he will play Magneto.

But it turned out that everything was not that simple.

The character that the actor plays is Mister Sinister or Nathaniel Essex, the geneticist and the villain, obsessed with studying human genes.

In the movie, the villain is going to have the name Nathaniel Milbury, as the comic book character’s history is tightly connected with genetics.

It is quite an interesting choice for Marvel. Traditionally, Magneto was one of the most recognized villains among X-Men.

Thus, the fact that Marvel decided not to use him in its first major villain for the new film gives it its own identity.

At the same time, the choice of the character gives many options to develop a story about the origins and nature of mutants, especially if Marvel intends to show in its new film something specific about this particular part of the population.

The New Generation of X-Men

Casting, as mentioned earlier, also gives us some indication of the path that Marvel seems to be taking with their mutant universe.

It is especially true about Sink’s Jean Grey and Connor’s Cyclops. These are characters that usually played an integral part in the X-Men storyline, and their relationship will probably play an essential part in forming the team’s identity.

However, the recruitment of such stars as Storm and Rogue gives Marvel the opportunity to work with characters, whose fan following is gigantic and which haven’t gotten their final representation in the MCU yet.

Emma Frost is one more interesting choice. Although this character was seen in live-action once, casting of Weaving gives Marvel the chance to reinvent her completely.

But let’s talk about Professor X.

The casting of Christopher Abbott hints at the fact that Marvel has taken the necessary steps to provide fans with an altogether different perspective on the man who made sure that the mutants came together.

It still remains to be seen whether Xavier has already begun running his school or not by the time the film starts.

Why Inde Navarrette’s Rogue Is Such a Big Deal

Out of all the casting decisions, there is perhaps none as interesting as Inde Navarrette being cast as Rogue.

What makes this especially curious is the fact that Navarrette is coming from an entirely different area of the entertainment industry.

Having starred in the horror movie Obsession, which was released in 2026, Navarrette became one of the most talked-about emerging actors, and the idea of her getting the Marvel part had already been raised.

Indeed, Navarrette herself had expressed interest in portraying Mystique, and the rumors about her meeting the director of X-Men film, Jake Schreier, only reinforced the idea.

The casting of Navarrette in the role of Rogue has become an extremely entertaining piece of news.

But, perhaps, Rogue will become even more interesting.

Being a very unique character emotionally, Rogue has certain abilities that make her unable to feel any physical contact with another person.

Therefore, she lives with the constant fear of knowing that even the smallest contact might kill another person.

In other words, Rogue is the character that has to be at once funny, vulnerable, guarded and magnetic.

And since Navarrette has shown great skills in playing in uncomfortable emotional settings in her performance in Obsession, her portrayal of Rogue will be extremely interesting.

It can be entirely different from Anna Paquin‘s interpretation of the character, in the previous live action X-Men movies. Which many X-Men fans were unhappy with.

Thus, Marvel will have a chance to create the emotional center of its mutant world.

This Is Only the Beginning

It may also be worth noting the one thing that was not revealed by the D23 announcement.

According to Feige, the announced cast is not all there is to be known – more cast members will join Marvel’s development process in the near future.

This means that such legendary mutants as Wolverine, Beast, or Gambit could still be introduced to the film.

There are lots of questions to ponder about.

Whom will Marvel choose for the role of Wolverine? Who else could be joining the lineup of the film? Will Mystique, Gambit, Jubilee, and Nightcrawler appear as part of the new team? And how closely is this mutant team going to relate to the rest of the MCU?

So far, we have no answers to these questions from Marvel.

What we can say now is that Marvel has created quite a unique set of mutants to start its new X-Men story.

As Sink, Connor, Abbott, Weaving, Boyd, Navarrette, and Driver lead the first batch, Marvel is definitely not planning on copying the formula of the previous series.

The mutants are finally entering the MCU.

With May 5, 2028 being the release date of the movie, we can only speculate further.
